Karangahake Gorge
Just a 10 minute drive from Waihi Motel, is Karangahake Gorge, an area steeped in gold mining history.
Karangahake Gorge is the site of the original gold rush in 1875 and is full of old mining machinery, old mining tunnels, and a spooky, old, bricked, 1km long railway tunnel. If you’re feeling adventurous, follow the swing bridges across the river and enjoy stunning New Zealand native bush.
If you’re visiting during warmer weather, take a picnic, enjoy a splash in one of the many swimming holes or try fly fishing in the river which runs through the gorge.
The Karangahake Gorge area features a number of walks, suitable for a range of different fitness levels. Take a short walk to the Talisman Mine’s pump room, a huge underground area used to dewater the mines many years ago. Venture a little further and you will reach the Crown Stope Mine, with great photo opportunities for tourists. For a more challenging hike, journey up through Scotsman’s Gully to Karangahake Mountain and follow the Dubbo 96 track back down to Dickey’s Flat.
The gorge is also home to a selection of cafes, a winery, a farm park and guided adventures and walks. Have lunch at the Waikino Station Cafe, followed by a nostalgic journey back to Waihi on the Goldfields Railway. For a number of great coastal walks, click here to discover Waihi Beach.
